What is Dance Movement Psychotherapy (Dance Therapy)?
Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) falls under the category of Arts Therapies, alongside music therapy, drama therapy, and art therapy. It is the psychotherapeutic use of expressive movement and dance through which an individual can engage creatively in a process of personal integration and growth.
Dance Movement Psychotherapy, as defined by the Association for Dance Movement Therapy UK (ADMT UK, 1977), is: "the psychotherapeutic use of movement and dance as a process which furthers the emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration of the individual."
It is suitable for both children and adults and can be applied at either an individual or group level. No previous experience in dance is required.
